Meet Melissa Easley: Educator, Advocate, and Community Leader

Melissa Easley is a dedicated public education advocate, a veteran educator, and a proud mother of two CMS students. With over 15 years of teaching experience, Melissa brings firsthand knowledge of the challenges and opportunities within our schools. She is seeking re-election for the CMS School Board, District 1 seat, representing North Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, and Davidson.

A Career in Education

Melissa’s journey in education began in 2006 in suburban Chicago, where she taught Science and Social Studies across multiple grade levels. After relocating to Charlotte in 2011, she continued her work in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, serving students in three different Title 1 schools. Her dedication to student success led her to further her education, earning a master’s degree in K-12 Instructional Technology from Walden University and achieving National Board Certification in Middle Level Science.

Advocacy and Leadership

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Melissa transitioned from the classroom to full-time advocacy, ensuring that educators, students, and families had a voice in critical decisions. She co-founded North Carolina Teachers United, an online platform with over 45,000 members, including educators, support staff, parents, and community leaders. Through this work, she continues to elevate the voices of those on the front lines of education.

Melissa has been a strong presence in town halls, school board meetings, and county commissioner sessions, advocating for increased investment in education, teacher pay, and safe learning environments. She believes that empowering educators leads to better student outcomes and is committed to making public education a top priority in Mecklenburg County.

Commitment to Students and Families

As a CMS parent, Melissa understands the importance of safety, equity, and academic excellence in our schools. She is committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has access to high-quality education, supportive teachers, and the resources they need to thrive.

Melissa believes that student success starts with strong leadership and accountability. She has pushed for policies that support educators, modernize classrooms, and improve academic outcomes. She knows that real change happens when the voices of teachers, parents, and students are heard and respected.

A Life Rooted in Community

Melissa and her husband Jeff have been proud residents of North Charlotte for over a decade. They have two children attending CMS schools and share their home with three dogs, a bearded dragon, and two turtles—former classroom pets now enjoying retirement. When she’s not advocating for public education, you can find Melissa engaging with the community, listening to stakeholders, and working to ensure that CMS remains a place where all students can succeed.

The Future of CMS

Melissa Easley is not just a candidate—she is a champion for students, teachers, and families. Her experience, passion, and dedication make her the best choice to continue representing District 1 on the CMS School Board.
